How to use this calculator

  1. Choose whether you're converting from an hourly wage or an annual salary, then enter the amount.
  2. Enter the hours you work per week and the number of paid weeks per year. Use 52 if you're paid for vacation and holidays.
  3. Enter the number of days you work per week to get a daily pay figure.
  4. If you're paid hourly and work overtime, open the overtime section and enter your usual overtime hours per week and overtime rate.
  5. Check "Show after-tax pay" and pick your filing status and state to see estimated take-home pay for every period.

How it's calculated

Annual pay from an hourly wage is hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks per year. An hourly rate from a salary is salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year).

Overtime pay is overtime hours per week × paid weeks × hourly rate × overtime multiplier, added to your base pay. With overtime, the hourly figure in the table is your average pay across all hours worked.

Weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly, and quarterly amounts divide annual pay by 52, 26, 24, 12, and 4. This spreads your pay evenly over the calendar year, so unpaid weeks off lower every periodic amount. Daily pay is annual pay divided by the number of days you work in a year.

The after-tax view runs your annual pay through the same federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare, and state income tax estimates as the Paycheck Calculator, assuming no pre-tax deductions, and applies the same take-home share to every period.

Assumptions

  • Assumes the same hours, rate, and overtime every working week of the year. Bonuses, commissions, tips, and shift differentials aren't included.
  • Overtime is only applied when converting from an hourly wage, since most salaried workers are exempt from overtime pay. Some salaried employees earning under the federal salary threshold are entitled to overtime — check with your employer.
  • After-tax figures assume a single job, a 2020-or-later Form W-4 with no adjustments, and no 401(k), health, or other deductions. Your actual paycheck may differ.
  • Results are estimates for comparison and planning only.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work per week, then by 52 weeks. At $25 an hour and 40 hours a week, that's $52,000 a year. A quick shortcut for a full-time, 40-hour job is to double the hourly rate and add three zeros: $25 → about $50,000.

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide your salary by the number of hours you work in a year. A full-time job at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, so a $75,000 salary works out to $36.06 an hour.

How many work hours are in a year?

A standard full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. If you take unpaid time off, subtract those weeks. Paid vacation and holidays still count, because you're paid for them.

How much is $25 an hour per month?

At 40 hours a week, $25 an hour is $4,333 a month before taxes ($52,000 ÷ 12). Because most months are a little longer than four weeks, monthly pay is about 4.33 times weekly pay, not 4.

What's the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?

Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, 26 times a year. Semimonthly pay comes twice a month, 24 times a year. On a $52,000 salary, a biweekly paycheck is $2,000 and a semimonthly one is $2,167.

How is overtime pay calculated?

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, most hourly workers earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. For example, at $20 an hour with 5 overtime hours a week, you'd earn $7,800 a year in overtime on top of $41,600 in base pay — $49,400 in total. Some states, like California, also require overtime after 8 hours in a day.

Is a salary or hourly job better?

It depends on the job. Hourly workers are usually paid for every hour, including overtime, which helps if you work long weeks. Salaried jobs more often come with paid time off, benefits, and a steady paycheck, but extra hours usually aren't paid. Compare the effective hourly rate of both, including benefits, before deciding.

How much of my pay will I take home after taxes?

It depends on your income, filing status, state, and deductions. Many workers take home roughly 70% to 85% of gross pay after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and state tax. Turn on the after-tax view for an estimate, or use the Paycheck Calculator to add 401(k) and health deductions.

Should I count paid time off when converting salary to hourly?

For a simple conversion, no — use 52 weeks, since you're paid for vacation and holidays. If you want your pay for hours actually worked, reduce the weeks per year by your paid time off. The hourly rate goes up because the same salary covers fewer working hours.
