Accuracy Standards
Math of Money is committed to providing accurate, reliable financial calculators. Every calculator is built from official sources, industry-standard formulas, and documented assumptions. We prioritize transparency over marketing—if our results differ from another tool, we explain why.
Sourcing and Primary References
We source all inputs and assumptions from primary sources:
- IRS publications, tax forms, and official guidance for federal tax calculations
- Social Security Administration for retirement and benefits data
- Federal Reserve and government housing data for mortgage calculations
- Official state tax agency data for state-specific taxes
- Historical market returns for investment scenarios
Each source is cited in our code and documentation. We avoid secondary sources and industry "consensus" in favor of official, verifiable data.
Who Writes and Checks Our Content
Math of Money is written and maintained by S M Ariful Islam Shawon. Calculators and articles carry a byline and a "last updated" date. We don't currently have a credentialed reviewer (CFP®, CPA, or EA); if that changes, reviewed pages will name the reviewer and the date of their review.
Testing Process
Before launch, each calculator is checked for:
- Mathematical accuracy: Every calculation engine has automated tests against hand-verified reference values.
- Tax rules: Brackets, limits, and withholding tables come from the IRS and SSA publications cited on each page, and are checked against their worked examples.
- Real-world scenarios: Results are compared to published examples from lenders, the CFPB, and official calculators.
- Edge cases: We test unusual inputs (zero interest, very long terms, edge ages) to ensure no calculation breaks.
Corrections and Updates
We monitor tax law changes, user reports, and industry updates. When an error is found:
- We fix the calculator within 48 hours of verification.
- We post a note explaining the change on the affected calculator page.
- We credit the user who reported the error (if they provide permission).
- For major corrections, we email users who have saved calculations using that tool.
Independence from Advertisers
Math of Money displays advertising to fund free calculators. Crucially:
- Advertisers have no influence over calculator results, formulas, or methodology.
- We do not favor particular lenders, products, or financial services in our calculations.
- Ads are never inserted into calculator results, forms, or methodology.
- We reserve the right to refuse ads from companies with misleading practices.
AI-Assisted Content
Some Math of Money content (calculators, documentation, educational articles) is created or refined with AI assistance (large language models). However:
- All content is checked by the author before publication.
- Core calculator logic is hand-written and tested, not AI-generated.
- We disclose AI use transparently to maintain user trust.
