How it's calculated
All conversions use a USD-base cross-rate approach. The API provides exchange rates quoted as units of each currency per 1 US Dollar (e.g. EUR = 0.87 means 1 USD = 0.87 EUR). To convert between two non-USD currencies, the calculator divides through the USD base: result = amount × (toRate / fromRate).
The live rate data comes from open.er-api.com, fetched once per hour and cached on Cloudflare's edge network. If the live feed is temporarily unavailable, the calculator falls back to a static snapshot of rates (indicated by a Using fallback rates notice). The fallback ensures you always get a result, but the rates may be outdated by days or weeks.
The stale badge appears whenever the rates shown are not from the current hourly refresh cycle — either because the live fetch failed or because you are viewing a cached response that is past its 1-hour window. Exchange rates fluctuate continuously; stale rates are still useful for rough estimates but should not be used for financial transactions.
Assumptions
- Rates are mid-market (the midpoint between buy and sell) and do not include bank fees, transfer margins, or spread. Your actual conversion cost at a bank or money-transfer service will differ.
- The USD-base approach means every conversion routes conceptually through the US Dollar. For most pairs this introduces no additional rounding error, since the provider quotes all currencies against USD anyway.
- Rate data is rounded to 6 significant figures before display.
Frequently asked questions
How current are the exchange rates?
Rates are fetched from open.er-api.com and cached for up to one hour on Cloudflare's global edge network. In normal operation, rates are never more than one hour old. If the live feed is unavailable, the calculator uses a bundled fallback snapshot and shows a 'Using fallback rates' warning.
Why is the rate I see different from my bank's rate?
This calculator shows the mid-market rate — the midpoint between the buy and sell prices. Banks, currency exchanges, and money-transfer services add a spread (margin) on top of the mid-market rate and often charge a transaction fee as well. The gap between the mid-market rate and what you actually pay can be 1–5% or more depending on the institution.
What is an exchange rate?
An exchange rate tells you how much of one currency you can get for a given amount of another. For example, a USD/EUR rate of 0.87 means 1 US Dollar buys 0.87 Euros. Rates fluctuate continuously based on supply and demand in global foreign-exchange markets.
How do I convert EUR to GBP if neither is USD?
The calculator handles cross-currency pairs automatically. It uses the USD-base rates for both currencies to compute the cross rate: EUR/GBP = (USD/GBP rate) ÷ (USD/EUR rate). You just pick EUR in the 'From' dropdown and GBP in the 'To' dropdown — no manual calculation needed.
